IBM creates first graphene-based circuit

ARMONK, N.Y., June 10 (UPI) -- IBM, which has headquarters in Armonk, N.Y., has created the world's first graphene-based integrated circuit on a single chip.

The demonstration chip is a radio frequency "mixer" capable of producing frequencies up to 10 gigahertz and represents IBM's success in creating graphene-based integrated circuits that will provide "dual use" technology for systems such as cellphones and military communications, the company said Friday.

IBM System Storage DS3500 Introduction and Implementation Guide

This IBM® Redbooks® publication introduces the IBM System Storage® DS3500, providing an overview of its design and specifications, and describing in detail how to set up, configure, and administer it. This edition covers updates and functions available with the DS3500 Storage Manager Version 10.70 (firmware level 7.70).
IBM has combined best-of-breed development with leading 6 Gbps host interface and drive technology in the IBM System Storage DS3500 Express. With its simple, efficient, and flexible approach to storage, the DS3500 is a cost-effective, fully integrated complement to System x® servers, BladeCenter®, and Power Systems™. Offering substantial improvements at a price that will fit most budgets, the DS3500 delivers superior price to performance ratios, functionality, scalability, and ease-of-use for the entry-level storage user.
The DS3500 supports intermixing four 1 Gbps iSCSI or four 8 Gbps FC host ports with its native 6 Gbps SAS interfaces. This flexible and multi-purpose dual protocol approach allows organizations to implement a single storage system to support all of their shared storage requirements, there by maximizing productivity, reliability, and cost.
Delivering solid input/output per second (IOPS) and throughput, the DS3500 controllers offer balanced and sustainable performance. The DS3500 can effectively double the performance of the previous DS3000 series of storage systems in both throughput and IOPS.
The DS3500 DS Storage Manager is the same management software offered with the DS5000 and DS4000® series. Now, any of these storage systems can be viewed and managed from a single interface. This allows for consolidated management of these various storage systems and a reduced learning curve. The DS3500 also supports enhanced remote mirroring over FC host ports, which is also compatible with the DS5000 and DS4000 series. This allows for low-cost backup and recovery with a DS5000 and DS4000 at a production site and a DS3500 at the secondary site.
This book is intended for customers, IBM Business Partners, and IBM technical professionals who want to learn more about the capabilities and advanced functions of the IBM System Storage DS3500 with Storage Manager Software. It also targets those who have a DS3500 storage system and need detailed advice on how to configure and manage it.

IBM Unleashes Wave of Secondary Storage

IBM today launched its biggest array of new secondary storage products ever.
The company announced new additions to its tape drive lineup along with enhancements to a number of backup and archiving solutions, including a new 3-exabyte tape library system that offers the highest capacity tape-based system in the industry.
The IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library makes use of new, IBM-developed shuttle technology that relies on a mechanical attachment to connect multiple tape libraries to a single library. As a result, IBM claims that the TS3500 offers 80 percent more capacity than a comparable Oracle tape library.

IBM Virtualization Engine TS7700 with R1.6

The IBM® Virtualization Engine TS7700 provides tape virtualization for the IBM System z® environment. The TS7700 Virtualization Engine is designed to provide improved performance and capacity to help lower the total cost of ownership for tape processing. The TS7700 Virtualization Engine introduces a new modular, scalable, high-performing architecture for mainframe tape virtualization. The TS7700 family now includes IBM Virtualization Engine TS7740 and IBM Virtualization Engine TS7720 (disk only) at R1.6.

The Virtualization Engine TS7700 integrates the advanced performance, capacity, and data integrity design of the IBM System Storage™ 3592 Tape Drives, the IBM industry-leading tape technology, with high-performance disk and a IBM System p® server to form a storage hierarchy managed by robust storage management firmware with extensive self management capability. It includes functions such as advanced policy management to control physical volume pooling, logical WORM support, cache management, Four-Cluster Grid configurations, an intermix of TS7740 Virtualization Engines and TS7720 Virtualization Engines in hybrid configurations, dual copy across a Grid network, and copy mode control. The TS7700 Virtualization Engine offers enhanced statistical reporting and a single, Centralized Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), standards-based Management Interface for TS7700 Virtualization Engine management.

In addition to providing a detailed description of the TS7700 Virtualization Engine models, this IBM Redbooks® publication discusses the tasks involved with planning, implementing, and operating the TS7700 Virtualization Engine, as well as describing migration considerations.

This publication covers the TS7700 Virtualization Engine Release 1.6 and includes information about supported tape drives and libraries current at the time of writing.

IBM j-type Data Center Networking Introduction

As organizations drive to transform and virtualize their IT infrastructures to reduce costs and manage risk, networking is pivotal to success. Optimizing network performance, availability, adaptability, security, and cost is essential to achieving the maximum benefit from your infrastructure.

But what is needed to support these networking requirements?

  • Expertise to plan and design networks with holistic consideration of servers, storage, application performance, and
    manageability
  • Networking solutions that enable investment protection with a range of performance and cost options that match your
    environment
  • Technology and expertise to design, implement, and manage network security and resiliency
  • Robust network management software to provide integrated, simplified management that lowers the operating costs of
    complex networks

IBM® and Juniper® have entered into an agreement to provide expanded network technology choices with the new IBM Ethernet switches, routers, and appliances to provide an integrated end-to-end resiliency and security framework.

Combined with the IBM vast data center design experience and with a field-proven operating system, Junos®, this portfolio, which we describe in this IBM Redbooks® publication, represents the ideal convergence of strength and intelligence. For organizations striving to transform and virtualize their IT infrastructure, such a combination can help you reduce costs, manage risks, and prepare for the future.
